16-foot wide mobile homes fall under special oversized permit regulations. Although each permit will outline specific conditions, the general guidelines include:

Permitted Travel Times: Monday through Saturday, with restricted hours from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Holiday travel restrictions apply.
Escort Certification: All escort vehicle operators must hold an approved escort certification before operating as an escort for oversize or overweight loads in North Carolina.
 
Special Rules for Superloads

Superloads are a distinct category of permitted loads and are subject to specific instructions provided on the permit, which should be reviewed thoroughly. A load is classified as a superload if it meets any of the following criteria:
Weight: Exceeds 132,000 pounds gross on seven or more axles.
Axle Grouping: Exceeds 68,000 pounds on four or more axle groupings.
Bridge Weight: Surpasses the allowable weight limit for low-limit or posted bridges.
Width: Greater than 15 feet, excluding mobile homes.

Escort Requirements for Superloads:

Front Escort: Required for loads wider than 12 feet on two-lane highways. On multi-lane highways, a rear escort is required, or as otherwise indicated on the permit.
Three Escorts: Required for loads exceeding 15 feet in width, with one escort provided by the NC State Highway Patrol.
Rear Escort: Required for loads exceeding 110 feet in length or for rear overhangs greater than 14 feet.
Front Escort: Required for loads with a total weight exceeding 149,999 pounds.
Additional Escorts: May be mandated based on specific route conditions and as determined by the issuing agent.

Police Escort Requirements
In addition to private escorts, a police escort is mandatory when:

Width exceeds 16 feet.
Height exceeds 16.5 feet.

Law enforcement escorts may also be required at any time at the discretion of the issuing agent.
