Escort Requirements

*The routing and permit will specify whether front or rear escorts are required.*

  • For all moves exceeding 14’6” in width;

  • For all moves exceeding 110’ in length;

  • For all moves exceeding 14’6” in height;

  • For any move on, across, or along a highway when additional warnings are required to alert the public, such as movements during darkness, weekends, or in response to emergencies, a civilian escort will be required;

  • When determined necessary by the Department’s Bridge Office analysis or District Investigations.

  • For all moves exceeding both 14’6” in width and 14’6” in height;

  • For all moves exceeding both 14’6” in height and 110’ in length;

  • For all moves exceeding both 14’6” in width and 110’ in length;

  • When determined necessary by the Department’s Bridge Office analysis or District Investigations.

  • For all moves exceeding 16’ in width;

  • For all moves exceeding 145’ in length;

  • For all moves exceeding 18’ in height;

  • When determined necessary by the Department’s Bridge Office analysis or District Investigations.

Police Escorts are Required:

  • For all moves exceeding 18’ in width;

  • For all moves exceeding 18’ in height;

  • For all moves exceeding 200’ in length;

  • For any move of an unusual nature where additional traffic control is required to alert the public to the permit movement;

  • For overweight moves requiring bridge restrictions where all traffic must be kept off the structure while the permitted vehicle crosses;

  • When deemed necessary by the Department’s Bridge Office analysis or District investigation.

  • A state police escort is generally required for moves outside or partially outside of a municipality, with a minimum 24-hour notice needed.

  • For moves partially or wholly within a municipality, the permit office will determine whether a state or municipal police escort is necessary.
