REQUIREMENT
The number and placement of pilot car escorts in Idaho are based on the route's color codes.
Red Routes
Width over 8'7" and up to 10'
Width over 10' and up to 12'6"
Length exceeds 75'
Over Legal width and over 75' length
Black Routes
Width over 12' and up to 14'
Width Over 14' and up to 14'6"
Length over 100'
Wider than 12' up to 14'6", and longer than 100 feet
White Routes (Interstate Highways)
Width 15’1” and up to 18’
Night Travel
Any over width load traveling after dark or on weekends on red-coded routes, as shown on the Pilot/Escort Vehicle and Travel Time Requirements Map, must be preceded by an escort vehicle with a rotating or flashing amber light to alert other traffic of the hazard. Additionally, any over width load exceeding 10 feet in width and moving after dark on black-coded routes must be preceded by a pilot/escort vehicle.
